What ceramic coating actually does
Ceramic coating is a durable protection option, not a miracle product.
A professional ceramic coating is applied over a prepared paint surface and is designed to create hydrophobic behaviour. Depending on the product, preparation, use and care, it may make routine washing easier and help the surface resist some environmental contamination.

What it does not do
Understanding the limits prevents disappointment.
- ✕It is not scratch-proof. Ceramic coating is harder than clear coat, but it is still scratched by abrasive contact. Incorrect washing — sponges, dirty cloths, brush car washes — will still create swirl marks on a coated car.
- ✕It does not fix existing defects. Coating is transparent, so visible defects may remain visible after application. Agree condition-appropriate preparation first; not every defect can or should be removed.
- ✕It does not last indefinitely without care. Abrasive washing and unsuitable chemicals can shorten useful performance regardless of the product's rated duration.
- ✕It does not protect against stone chips or impact damage. For stone chip protection, paint protection film (PPF) is the appropriate product — it is a physical barrier, not a chemical one.
- ✕It is not maintenance-free. A coated car still needs regular washing — just less frequently and with less effort than an uncoated car.
When coating makes sense
The economics of coating depend on how you use and keep the car.
Ceramic coating is most worthwhile when several conditions align:
- ·Ownership period: Long enough to use the maintenance benefit. A near-term sale can make the additional cost harder to justify.
- ·Parking situation: Outdoor or partial shelter. Cars parked outdoors benefit more from UV protection and hydrophobic properties. Fully garaged cars benefit less — though the ease-of-washing benefit applies regardless of parking.
- ·Wash commitment: Willing to hand-wash or use a touchless automatic wash. The most important behavioural change coating requires. Without correct washing, the coating's hydrophobic properties degrade rapidly.
- ·Paint condition: In correctable condition before coating. The paint should be assessable and correctable before coating is applied. Very thin or heavily corrected clear coat may not be suitable without careful assessment.
What shorter and longer-rated coatings mean
Rated duration is a condition-dependent estimate, not a guarantee.
Duration labels are manufacturer ratings tied to a product and its stated conditions. Real-world performance also depends on preparation, exposure, washing, maintenance and whether the surface was suitable at application.

Required preparation
Preparation is as important as the coating itself.
A coating follows the condition of the prepared surface beneath it. Visible defects may remain visible after application, so the preparation scope should be matched to the paint and the agreed outcome.

- ·Decontamination: Chemical treatment to remove bonded iron fallout, tar and mineral deposits
